The early 1980's witnessed a growing influx of young Irish emigrants to the Bay Area of Northern California, and in particular to San Francisco.
This influx to San Francisco culminated in a powerful Irish Community. A community eager to embrace the traditions and customs of their new home,
yet anxious to retain their unique Irish identity and rich heritage. The ensuing years generated a remarkable rise in Irish Cultural activity.
Many emigrants developed a strong interest as spectators of sport native to their adopted country: American football, baseball, basketball and more.
However, a large number of emigrants continued to play the sports, which truly captured their hearts and spirit, those of their native land.
The Young Irelands G.F.C. became part of that emigrant cultural development with their formation on January 9th 1986. All the aspects and aspirations
of any G.A.A club were adopted at that first meeting which was held at Irelands 32 on Geary Boulevard in San Francisco. Since that first meeting nearly 20
years ago the Young Irelanders have developed into one of the strongest clubs in the western division both on and off the playing field.
We have always strived to maintain the highest level of interest and eagerness in our native games as laid down by the founding members in that
first meeting on January 9th 1986. Our member base is as diverse now as it was then. We have always welcomed new members with warmth and care
through the years and will continue to do so. As we move into the 21st century, times are changing. The trend of immigration continues but with a
greater diversity. Silicon Valley has seen massive growth and along with that the Irish community has been expanded with the influx of a new generation
of young immigrants to work in the computer industry. The Young Irelanders G.F.C. presently field a junior teams. We will continue to welcome old and
new members at every opportunity. Our heritage and culture will always be with us where ever we are, and that as we all know, is what the G.A.A has
and will continue to go from strength to strength.
